Lead Scientist (Wild Studios)

Wild Earth and VegInvest have developed a food tech incubator, Wild Studios, which will accelerate the development of an economy free from animal exploitation. Wild Studios works with early stage start-ups and partners with commercial stage companies, and creates, from the ground up, new brands and companies meant to fill “white spaces” in the animal-replacement landscape. Wild Studios focuses on a variety of approaches, including plant-based, recombinant and cell-based, and provides the scientific, operational, scaling, sales, marketing and commercialization capabilities that early stage and growth stage companies require.

Required background:

-PhD in Biology/Life Sciences or related field with more than 3 years cell culture and media development post-graduate/industry experience OR

-Masters in Biology/Life Science, Bioegineering, Chemical Engineering or related field with more than 5 years industry experience in cell culture and media development within pharmaceutical/biotechnology company

Preferred experience:

-Invertebrate/seafood cell culture or developmental biology

-Cell culture of satellite cells or myoblasts

-Establishing primary cell cultures into cell lines

-Formulation of serum-free or plant-based culture media

-Media/platform optimization

-Have a strong understanding of statistical analysis and design of experiments (DOE)

Principal roles and responsibilities:

- Isolate primary cells and establishing cell lines

- Screening of culture media optimal for cell growth

- Maintain cells in culture including routine media exchange, harvest, and sampling

- Sourcing of food-grade and animal-free ingredients for cell culture media

- Formulation of food-grade animal-free, ideally plant-based, cell culture media

- Identify outside vendors and resources where appropriate and oversee external projects required to accomplish project goals

- Rigorous documentation of experimental procedures and data

- Communicate results and data in a timely and effective manner

- Contribute to regulatory submissions and inspections as appropriate as a subject matter expert representing media development process

- Develop the prototype and establish a workflow for cell-based meat in line with the company’s vision.

- Responsible for establishing company’s strategic R&D roadmap and to provide exemplary scientific input into company’s research and development programs in order to support the overall corporate strategy set by the Board.

- To maintain the highest quality of scientific foundations of the company’s clean meat development process.

- To provide other members of the scientific team with continuous scientific input in the areas of business development, manufacturing and commercialization, financial planning and execution, regulatory matters, manufacturing, extramural funding processes and initiatives.

- Responsible for providing strategic input for company’s mid- and long-term goals from the scientific standpoint.

- Responsible for the composition, relationship development, and value adding output from company’s Scientific Advisory Board.

- Support the packaging of the company’s insights through collaborations with other companies, venture capital firms and other partners to create value.

-Must be forward-thinking and be able to lead and contribute to scientific/technical discussions

-Able to independently learn, understand and execute novel/advanced scientific techniques

-Strong time-management and organizational skills

-Have great attention to detail and ability to keep detailed written records in a lab notebook or batch record

-Have strong communication skills including verbal, written, and scientific data presentation to a variety of audiences

-Interest to lead an expanding research team

-Able to work collaboratively within and outside of the group
