Payroll & Benefits Manager

The Payroll and Benefits individual will be responsible for the accurate and timely payroll processing and benefits administration for employees at both Headquarters in San Francisco and our Manufacturing Facility in Appleton, Minnesota. This person will work closely and collaboratively with the larger Finance Team, the People Team, and other cross-functional departments; as the go-to person for employee inquiries regarding payroll and benefits, this individual must be able to effectively communicate and interface with all members of our organization.


- Manage all aspects of payroll processes for both our (semi-monthly) San Francisco Headquarters and (bi-weekly) Manufacturing Plant in Appleton, Minnesota

- Provide recommendations on best practices for payroll setup; implement, maintain and review payroll processing systems to ensure the timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes and other deductions; process worker’s compensation codes and reporting

- Calculate and coordinate pay in accordance with our business policies and leave laws (state disability, private short-term/long-term disability plans, workers compensation, unemployment)

- Develop processes and perform analytical reviews of payroll information to ensure accuracy of every payroll, as well as quarter and year-end processes

- Maintain compliance on all payroll processing of gross to net pay, taxation (both multi-state and localities), and perform internal auditing to ensure regulatory compliance

- Partner with People Team to ensure accuracy of our benefit programs such as retirement, health and disability plans

- Counsel employees regarding a variety of personnel and benefit issues including payroll, taxes, garnishments, 401k, etc.

- Assure that existing and new benefits programs are adaptable to standardized computer and reporting systems, along with, developing benefit information and statistical and census data for actuaries, insurance carriers, and management

- Work cross-functionally and collaboratively with the larger Finance Team, People Team, and other groups to ensure the success of the above responsibilities and other additional duties as needed

About You:

Education & Experience

- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field with at 6+ years of experience managing payroll

- Experience in a small to mid-size pre-IPO organization

- Extensive knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws/regulations (i.e., tax laws, social security, wage and hour, HIPPA, COBRA, 401(k), etc.)

- Strong systems capability; experience with HR systems, Paycom preferred, but not required

- Demonstrated experience/solid working knowledge of debits and credits used in General Ledger system modules, with the ability to research and drill down on postings to understand the underlying transactions

- Extremely proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook and accounting software
