A self-motivated, hands-on Senior Engineer/Scientist to lead development and scale-up of Bolt’s mycelium based Mylo™ bio-leather. The ideal candidate will enjoy working at laboratory, pilot plant, and production scales. They will have strong technical fundamentals and practical experience in the design and execution of experiments. The ideal candidate will appreciate the challenge of continuous process improvements in yield, quality, and ultimately overall economics. They will motivate team members and mentor junior engineers and scientists through their technical curiosity and leadership. They will be able to collaborate effectively and efficiently within teams, across the company, and with external CRO and CMO’s. This position will play a key role on a multidisciplinary team working to manufacture Mylo for the textiles industry.

The Work:

- You will lead the development of a commercially scalable process for mycelium growth, preservation (curing) and tanning

- You will identify important variables to control and guide the team to run experiments to test hypothesis around yield and quality (through DoE)

- Evaluate and optimize process performance and product quality quantitatively against defined metrics and manufacturing cost targets

- You will take ownership of projects, try new approaches, collaborate with cross functional teams, CRO’s and CMO’s

- Manage team members on experimental approaches and overall project planning and management

- Research, learn, and work with partners, experts and institutes incorporating promising techniques and technologies in mycelium growth, including curing and tanning

- Prepare technology transfer documents including detailed process descriptions, mass balances, process flow diagrams (PFD’s)

- Lead tech transfer, start-up, and process optimization efforts

- Participate and advise in the development of final product specifications in close collaboration with the Product Development team

- Develop, maintain, and follow standard operating procedures (SOP’s); participate in hazards and operations reviews (HAZOP’s)

- Contribute to Bolt’s safety culture and work safe at all times

This Team will be excited to have you because you bring...

- B.S. or MS in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biology or Mycology/Botany or equivalent with a focus on development and scale-up with 7-10 years or PhD with 5 years of relevant experience

- Understanding of aseptic processing conditions

- Experience with fungi and mushroom growing a plus

- Demonstrated ability to quickly understand a new technology and processes

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent written and verbal communication

- Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% in support of CRO/CMO work

- Good interpersonal skills and communication written and oral skills
